DAY 1264. A pair of cranes flew over our heads tonight, silently flapping their great wings in a span that seemed outrageously large, for the height of their flight path was the lowest I’ve ever seen them fly. It’s rare in itself for us to see just two here on the mesa, since most of the time they pass over us in migration, sometimes drawing great circles overhead.
My love and I were on an evening walk with the dog and it had become extremely still after a very windy day, which is the norm here in spring. Out of the quiet sky the two birds appeared. They brought with them an immediate calm, and we all stood still and watched as the birds flew right over our heads— perhaps only 50 feet up or less? They were so close that we could see the red light of the setting sun on their legs. One of them called out— maybe to us— and as they passed overhead the other called, too.
It felt mystical and profoundly meaningful. Only later, upon editing the day’s Qigong form, did I connect the birds to the form I had been moving through just a moment before. The shape of my wings mimicked the shape of their wings. I feel on some level that perhaps I had summoned them; this specific form can be used to call on allies, guides, and teachers in the seen and unseen realms. The reason I chose to share it today is to offer support to those who may be experiencing anxiety.
An excerpt from the written description I wrote for Black Eagle Wings Qigong:
We can move through this Qigong form when we feel anxious or when we’re experiencing anxiety. By calling on those who symbolize for us presence, calm, wisdom, and healing, we can tap into our own presence, so we can access our own wisdom. The process of actively seeking help from those one looks up to has a direct effect, opening one up to one’s healed, whole self. It makes space for learning what our anxiety might be trying to tell us about ourselves.
In Kenneth Cohen’s book, The Way of Qigong, he describes the correlation between anxiety, breath, Qi, and the lungs. “The English word anxiety comes from a German root angst, ‘narrow,’ referring to the narrowing of the bronchial passages. During times of anxiety, breath and qi are constricted, unable to flow easily in and out of the lungs.”
In Black Eagle Wings Qigong, we use the Metal Element in support of the lungs via the breath cycle; by filling the lungs to capacity and exhaling completely, we make space for the breath to flow fully and the Qi to move effortlessly. The movement itself is in encouragement of the lungs; the arms describe the shape of these wing-shaped organs, sweeping up the center and fountaining earthward.
