Why do some mushroom spores seem to dance? Filmmaker Catherine Marciniak was on a mission to capture the mushroom ‘spore rain’ that occurs with some fungi. She and her partner Stephen Axford, a time-lapse videographer and photographer, are known for their imagery that celebrates both the beauty and science of fungi, but what she witnessed was so much more than she expected – “It was like watching a murmuration of birds, or a school of fish, swirling together with purpose”.
Intrigued, she researched the observation and discovered a scientific paper that revealed that some mushrooms can create their own mini weather patterns near the surface of the cap. As the moisture that helped the spore release evaporates, convection currents are created which can carry the spores up to tens of centimetres away from the mushroom surface where they may catch a breeze.
