When it comes to cyber security, the members of the Usr0 Club here at Chico State, are some of the best there are.

David Zeichick, Computer Science Professor, “It’s great to have students that are not only capable, but also incredibly motivated to do well in these competitions.”

David Zeichick is a Computer Science professor, and the faculty advisor for the Usr0 Club. And the competition he’s talking about, is the NCL, or National Cyber League Team Competion, featuring schools from around the country. Chico State has now finished in the top ten, five consecutive times, including a 3rd place finish out of 779 teams this fall.

Jacob Pawek, Computer Science Major, “It felt pretty good, ending up high on the leaderboard. There was definitely some pretty difficult challenges, that we were neck and neck with some of the other teams with, but we really went into it with the intention of trying to finish everything that we could, and we got pretty close.”

The competition takes place over the course of a weekend, from Friday evening through Sunday. Teams are given between 30 and 40 problems to crack, and then have to get to work, finishing as many as they can.

Pawek, “A lot of the questions are separated into distinct categories, like some of them are specifically stuff looking at network trafficking, and some of them are password cracking, and there’s a lot of other categories too. So when we were first starting we tried to delegate each person to work on a specific subject, and then once we cleared off some of the easier questions, we kind of converged and worked on the harder ones together.”

They did so well, that the group was invited to a similar competition, consisting mainly of industry professionals. There out of 25 teams, Chico State finished second in the first round of the competition, and 3rd in the second the round, beating out teams from companies like Pinterest, Facebook, and Uber.

Zeichick, “I knew they would do really well. But it is surprising to see that industry professionals, somewhat struggled a little bit a little bit behind this team.”

Pawek, “It’s something we can bring up in an interview or a discussion with a recruiter, as experience that we had, and show that we were able to compete at an industry standard, so I think that says a lot about our abilities.”

As talented as they are, it should come as no surprise, that Chico State came in ranked number one in the most recent Cyber Skline and NCL, Cyber Power Rankings for colleges and universities.

Tony Buranzon, Computer Science Major, “It’s definitely awesome to see the Chico State name being up there on top, and just know that I was a part of, kind of what brought us to that level.”

And it’s a level this program has been at, and will likely to continue to be at, for some time to come.
