Curtis Martin discusses the U.S. whaling industry from the 17th to the early 20th century, including its historical development and economic importance. In doing so he will discuss the dangers inherent in whaling; species hunted, products sold, and design of the ships and the life of the crews. Finally, Dr. Martin will address the ultimate decline of the industry and how it impacted New England.

Dr. Martin as Professor Emeritus, has also lectured on Life on a Whaleship, Scrimshaw: The Whaleman’s Art, and Petticoat Whalers: Women and Whaling.

Dr. Martin taught Political Science, International Relations, Comparative Politics and U.S.
Foreign Policy at Merrimack College, North Andover, MA, from 1974 -2012. He was educated at Harvard University, BA; Tufts, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, PhD. in International Relations

He has co-authored books on, Local Economic Development: The Federal Connection, Politics East and West: Political Culture in Japan and Britain. Additionally, he has written articles on nuclear non-proliferation diplomacy with Iran and North Korea.

Curtis has been a resident of Wellesley since 1979. His hobbies include building sailing ship
models, oil painting marine landscapes, collecting scrimshaw and other whaling-related items.
