What does it mean to be a culturally competent educator? Terms from topic 1
Dynamics of difference/ knowing what can go wrong in cross-cultural communication and how to respond to these situations is a great direction to being culturally competent. To be a culturally competent educator means to be able to adjust your teaching style based off of each students’ individual strengths. Teachers must communicate high expectations, teach within the context of culture, make learning easy, give instruction based on the students, and have positive views about parents and families. We must be able to identify each student’s identity as well.
Where do you see yourself on the cultural competency continuum chart and why? Support with position regarding specific controversial, culturally-based issues affecting K-12 ed.
I see myself at number 5. Cultural Competence on the cultural competency continuum chart because I understand there is always room for improvement. I also can see myself being at number 6. Cultural Proficiency on the cultural competency continuum chart because I understand how the different cultures are both separate and connected at the same time.
What will it take for u to get to the next step or to deepen your cultural competence, including understanding your own personal bias, teaching in a diverse classroom, and implementing strategies for ensuring a safe and supportive classroom for all students?
For me to get to the last step or to deepen my cultural competence, understand my own personal bias, teach in a diverse classroom, and implement strategies for ensuring a safe and supportive classroom for all my students I must master the attitude, relationship, and practices category in number 6. Cultural Proficiency.
What are some specific research and readings, tools, resources, or training you might use to further your cultural competency as an educator?
I can use the resources available to me like the GCU library to access a plethora of information regarding things I can do to further my cultural competency as an educator. I already downloaded some readings to help with developing my competency like the Handbook of Research on Social Inequality and Education, Mentoring Students of Color, and Not Light, but Fire : How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom. I also have a friend who mentors troubled children I can learn some techniques to address certain issues and further develop my cultural competency.
What will it look like to have cultural inclusivity in your future classroom?
I will be sure to understand the students I work with. It is important to build rapport with the students as well as their parents and families. I will be sure to teach that no student is a majority and we are all a minority. By developing further cultural competence I can create an environment that honors and includes different cultures.
How will you ensure you are respecting students as individuals with differing personal backgrounds and various skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests that do not align to your spiritual beliefs and moral values?
I will understand the challenges and opportunities in each student’s life and respect them. By developing connections and building a relationship with the local communities I can see the different skills, abilities, perspectives, talents, and interests of the students and their peers in the community to understand cultures and interests that do not align to my spiritual beliefs and moral values better. I will understand students’ cultural strengths and weaknesses to tailor my teaching styles accordingly.
