Throughline: Empathy is the key to dismantling racism and building connections of understanding and acceptance. Instructional Assistant Professor, Donna Kiel tells the story of how the 2020 cultural reckoning on racial injustice and a phone call of gratitude from a former student, shook her beliefs in her own empathy. Her story unveils the complicated truth of working as an anti-racist and how she misused empathy while within her own white privilege and how vulnerability is the true key to dismantling racism.

About the Speaker: Answering a call to make the world a better place, Donna Kiel spent over two decades as a school counselor and high school principal. Now as a College of Education professor in Educational Leadership, Dr. Kiel takes those experiences and works to train future leaders and teachers as social justice advocates grounded in equity. Her empathy-driven approach is the spark that ignites inspiration in others so that they may achieve their truest potential.
