Chelesa is a founder and volunteer executive director of The Diaper Bank of the Delta, Mississippi’s only nationally recognized basic need bank providing free diapers, wipes, formula, and other necessities to families, women, and girls.
According to National Diaper Bank Network data, infants and toddlers need 8 to 12 diapers daily, a $70-$80 a month per child expense that cannot be purchased with funds provided in most state and federal safety net programs.
In the first four years, the Diaper Bank increased distribution from 20,000 to 75,000 diapers a year. In 2019, Chelesa secured a donated building, giving the organization a permanent home to help meet the increasing demand.
When the pandemic triggered job losses for many families, Chelesa secured funding for her Diaper Bank on the Move initiative to meet the increase in demand. Two days a week, Chelesa, an apprentice, and volunteers haul a trailer to surrounding communities with no access to
transportation. The other three days, families pick up items from the Clarksdale location. Since March 2020, the initiative has helped them to distribute more than 300,000 diapers, increasing monthly outreach from 200 families in a handful of Delta communities to 500 families in 25 counties.
Chelesa, who has worked for years in maternal and child health programs, has also expanded services to Delta families by combining several programs she operates under one roof, creating The Delta Hub. She teaches a nine-week parenting program for new mothers, known as Baby University; offers a once-a-week drop-in for breastfeeding mothers called Crossroads Baby Café; and operates a depot for mothers to donate breast milk.
“We meet the physical needs through the diaper bank,” said Chelesa. “The other programs provide education and advocacy. Our ultimate goal is to become the central hub for early childhood resources in the Delta region.”
