"When someone comes forward to seek help, we respect the medical-in-confidence information. These will not be pass around to different agencies," said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing in Parliament on Tuesday (27 July).

Mr Chan added that "only in exceptional cases" where there is a "real threat" that agencies may use the information to work with other agencies to pre-empt any tragedy.

He was responding to clarifications sought by Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) Shahira Abdullah on the tragic death of a 13-year-old student at River Valley High School.

Dr Shahira had asked what is the strategy of the Ministry of Health (MOH) when it comes to suicide prevention as well as self-harm and suicide attempts for students.

She cited preliminary investigations on the incident which revealed that the 16-year-old murder suspect had been assessed at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) before.
