The Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation is delighted to announce the signing of a conservation easement -- one of the first of its kind in Ecuador -- guaranteeing protection of the Lalo Loor Dry Forest. The reserve, located on this South American country's central coast, protects 430 acres of highly threatened tropical semi-deciduous forest. The reserve was created in 2004, in partnership with local dairy farmer Sr. Lalo Loor. Ceiba has worked for 15 years to build trails and infrastructure, develop research and volunteer projects, and offer education programs to local communities. Our goal has always been to hand management over to the Loor family, once we built the reserve into a self-sustaining ecotourism business. After more than a decade of tireless effort, we have succeeded, and Lalo Loor and his family are now leading the reserve into a new chapter, as an example of a locally-owned and operated destination. To guarantee long-term protection of the forest, and its multitude of unique plants and animals, Ceiba and Sr. Loor signed a Conservation Easement on 11 March, 2020. Although conservation easements have long been popular in the US, the Ceiba Foundation is a pioneer in applying them to private lands protection in Ecuador. In 2000, we drafted South America's first conservation easement to protect the El Pahuma Orchid Reserve, and the current easement with Sr. Loor represents just the fifth such agreement in that country. We are proud to stand on the cutting edge of private lands conservation in the tropics, and we are energized to continue working with the Loor family to guarantee the protection, and economic sustainability, of this amazing forest.
