The creation of castes in the Spanish colonies was integral to their social structure and their understanding of race. The concept of race is socially constructed, and tells us how to behave and treat each other. It has become such a part of the fabric of our society that not being able to identify someone’s race or ethnicity is a source of discomfort for many, especially Americans. Laws and government systems have been created in order to reinforce these ideas. Everything from the religion to science has been used to justify and explain why we have created a hierarchy based on race, and it explains why it is easier to accept that someone is inferior or sub-human and therefore not worthy of compassion if we see them as far removed from how we see ourselves.

Scientifically, there is no such thing as race, it is not something we can determine by looking at an individual's DNA. There is no marker that says you are White, Black or Asian. Simply looking at someone will not reveal their race; we can guess based on our preconceived notions, but it is not something we can do with exactitude.

We are more alike than we are dissimilar.
