CAN DOING NOTHING HELP CHRONIC PAIN?
Niall Kelly, MSc(Mngt), Alexander technique teacher
The problem with chronic pain is it can last a long time, in many cases because of the real risk of doing something that will worsen the situation. After 30 years of chronic pain and many unsuccessful treatments to deal with it, I came across the Alexander technique in 2001. On seeing how effective it was. I trained to become a teacher, qualifying in 2004.
Since then I have been virtually pain free through applying the practices and principals of human behaviour and performance Alexander uncovered. These involve focusing on becoming aware of what we do that limits performance or adds to chronic pain, stopping and using specific directions to manage our brain’s responses to stimuli including pain. The only activity involved is lying down and breathing!
In this talk I will show how this approach holds very little risk of further pain or injury andwhy doing ‘little or nothing’ works very well for chronic pain.
Niall Kelly’s career began in marine and aviation communications before he moved into industrial relations, then on into HR, managing change and organisation development. Since qualifying as a teacher in 2004 he has been working extensively with singers and instrumentalist in the Irish World Academy at UL amongst others. His main focus is on aging well, chronic pain, voice and performance. He is a founding chair of the Irish Society of the Alexander Technique teachers.
