Modern American libraries are centers of access to ideas, books, AV – and technology. We are continuing our successful partnership with the Johnson County Library as part of our growing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach with the Black & Veatch MakerSpace at Central Resource Library. Library patrons will be able to develop their own VR projects and explore the cutting-edge intersection of 3D modeling, virtual reality and digital fabrication. Youth Services librarians will work with teachers to book field trips to the Black & Veatch MakerSpace. Library Makers are also working with teachers and administrators about how they can integrate these technologies in their schools. Makers will expand development and circulation of the popular Maker Kits, which will contain equipment that can be checked out.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
George White | Civil Engineer, Black & Veatch

"First thing, I walk in and you’ve got all these different stations. Different types of technologies. Different programs. Video editing. A CNC machine. All these different things for the community that’s free.

Two of the kids I talked to, it was there very first time [3D] printing. And they were like yeah, I just grabbed this off the internet and I’m printing. So next, can I make something myself and [3D] print it.

It just starts with a small thing, you know, there’s just so many people that don’t have access to these types of things to engage their minds in that way. And the local community having access to those things is just huge.

I’m very proud to work at Black & Veatch as a place that supports community programs like this because at the end of the day we are helping getting kids and really adults engaged in their passions of tinkering or inventing. Just increasing the STEM space and the awareness overall."
