Learn how to basket weave with Umm Ibrahim and her daughter Maram in Umm Qais
Umm Ibrahim, resident of Umm Qais is now in her 70’s, but still keeping alive the tradition of basket weaving. Learning from her mother, this cultural tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, spanning over thousands of years, with even some citations of the oldest civilizations practicing this handicraft in 8,000 BCE. As the time old tradition still stands, Umm Ibrahim continued to share practices of basket weaving to her daughter, Maram, who learned how to basket weave when she was 5-years-old. While basket weaving uses the simple tools of a needle and wheat spikes, the practice itself requires an immense amount of focus and intricate developed skills. With wheat growing in this part of the region, many practitioners of this handicraft use the wheat grown in their own farms, collect it to create straw and preserve it so no sun or moisture will ruin its texture. In this experience, Umm Ibrahim and Maram will demonstrate how to weave baskets in a performance and then guests will be able to learn how to weave baskets of their own afterwards. Moreover, guests will be treated to their very own handmade woven basket as a memory to take home. To book this experience:
