Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute (MCVI) recently unveiled Azurion with FlexArm: a new advance in imaging technology designed to make it easier for doctors to perform image guided procedures for heart and vascular disease.
The technology was co-developed with Philips over a three-year period inside MCVI’s advanced imaging laboratory, a spacious interventional operating suite created to handle the most complex image-guided procedures.
The FlexArm can move on eight different axes, controlled by a single operator. As the system moves, the image beam maintains alignment with the patient, allowing more consistent visualization throughout the treatment.
This flexibility is particularly useful as interventional procedures become more complex, requiring larger multidisciplinary teams of clinicians to work together at the bedside in a highly coordinated manner.
MCVI is the first cardiovascular center in North America to use the FlexArm technology, which it debuted in January during a live case beamed to hundreds of cardiovascular specialists during the annual International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET), in Ft. Lauderdale.
MCVI's Dr. Barry Katzen and Dr. Constantino Pena explain how the new technology benefits doctors and their patients.

[Constantino Pena, M.D. Interventional Radiologist and Medical Director of Vascular Imaging, Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute]

[A large medical procedure room featuring the Philips Azurion with Flex Arm equipment is shown. The room includes a procedure table, large color monitors and a very large and tall imaging system positioned at the end of the table]

Dr. Pena: The advanced imaging laboratory is created for procedures that we do now, but also for the complex procedures of the future. This technology is quite unique, it really brings together 10 or more years of innovation that we've worked along with Philips to create, really the ideal imaging system to treat our patients.

[A radiology technician in the empty procedure room demonstrates how the Flex arm is able to move around the procedure table and rotate on its axis to move into a wide range of positions from which to take images of a patient]

The flex arm technology will now allow us to image our patients throughout very complicated cases, from any angle, any side, without necessarily needing to move the operators, move the monitors. It really was a vision of Dr. Katzen to challenge industry to create a system and a geometry where there was no longer a limitation as to which side of the table you were imaging, where the anesthesiologist was going to be, where all the operators are going to be.

[Barry T. Katzen, M.D. Founder and Chief Medical Executive Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute]
[International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET) Live Case January 28 2019]

[Dr. Katzen and a team of doctors are using the Azurion Flex Arm during a minimally invasive interventional cardiology procedure that is being streamed live to a symposium audience at a remote location]

Dr. Katzen: It's kind of a special event day for us because it's the first time live cases from this next generation imaging device, and I just wanna point out a couple of things. You can see Dr. Koyo and I are working across from each other and one of the unique features of this is because of the rotating column right here and our ability to do things, this room was designed to really optimize these complex multi-disciplinary endovascular procedures.

[As the doctors perform the procedure, the Azurion Flex Arm is rotated into various positions around the patient on the procedure table. Live image scans of the patient are displayed on large monitors to guide the doctors' work]

Dr. Pena: This is just one more step of being at that cutting edge and trying to really always push the envelope for our patients so they know they can receive the best care here at the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute.
