This Week’s chat is about authoring tools. When we produce content for the web we use authoring tools to publish. How these tools can help produce accessible content can have a profound impact on the overall inclusiveness of the internet.

Mike Gifford is the founder of OpenConcept Consulting Inc, which he started in 1999. Since then, he has been particularly active in developing and extending open source content management systems to allow people to get closer to their content. Before starting OpenConcept, Mike had worked for a number of national NGOs including Oxfam Canada and Friends of the Earth.

As a techie at heart, Mike likes to get into the code when he gets the chance. Being ultimately concerned about the implementation and implications of the technology, he is able to envision how your website can become a much more powerful communications tool for your organization.

Mike has been involved with accessibility issues since the early 1990’s and is a strong advocate for standards based design.

Susanna Laurin is Chief Research and Innovation Officer at Funka.
Susanna has more than 20 years experience in working with disability-related issues at senior management level. She is a frequent international lecturer and debater and she serves on a number of program committees for conferences in the field of accessibility.

With a long experience in national and international standardisation work, she is a technical expert to ETSI in the assignment of making the EN301549 into a harmonised European standard to cover the mobile requirements of the Web Accessibility Directive.

In Sweden and Norway, she is a technical expert in several standardisation committees.

Susanna has a number of assignments at strategic policy level on behalf of national governments, studies and investigations all over the world. 2017-2019 she is assigned as an expert to the European Commission and the Member States representatives during the transposition of the Web Accessibility Directive, chairing the group focusing on monitoring methodology in the Subgroup of WADex.
