Shrimp/prawn and fish farms are common sights in the coastal and island areas of Kerala, especially in Ernakulam district, as they massively contribute to the export economy of the region. These farms are interchangeably used to cultivate a certain rice breed that is grown in saline water, and for fish farming. Once the monsoons are over, the paddy is harvested and the stems are left behind in the water-filled fields. Those stems in turn become the food for the prawns and fishes. Indigenous technology is applied in the making and usage of sluices that work as controlled entry and exit gates for the saline water. The juveniles are attracted to the field during high tides through these sluices using lights placed on the outside of the sluice. Once they are inside the farm, the sluice gates are closed until they are ready to be harvested. Then, during low-tides, the lights are again placed on the inside of the gates, where a nest will be kept for harvesting. The fishes come attracted by the light and get caught in the nest, while the water is drained out through the open sluice gates. Lights are an integral part of this technology used for local fish farming. Nowadays many youngsters are interested in fish farming.
