Ready-made canvases are expensive, so why buy a canvas when you can learn the essential skills to build your own! There are three main steps in assembling your own canvas: building the frame, stretching and stapling the canvas over the frame, and applying acrylic gesso to seal canvas surface so it is ready for painting or mixed media art.
The Ghost Town Arts Collective and Amy Hoffman-Shehan have partnered to offer this workshop for artists in any media to become for self-sufficient. Participants will gain hands-on experience building their own canvas using pre-made stretcher bars from Blick.com to make an 18” x 24” frame. All materials including hardware will be provided to produce a finished canvas.
And on top of that … Amy will perform a demonstration on how to build your own stretcher from wood purchased at the hardware store!
Seats are limited, so reserve yours today.
About the Instructor:
Amy Hoffman-Shehan earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from University of North Texas and studied Printmaking at University of New Mexico. She had to leave her studies early after developing a sensitivity to chemicals used in printmaking. Amy has developed painting and drawing techniques that replicate the intricate layering she loved in printmaking without the chemical exposure. She is a former member of GYST Art and a current member of Ghosts Town Arts Collective. She has had a lifelong interest in the needle arts, learning to sew at age 9 and to crochet and knit as a teen. She is a third generation recycler and has been interested in environmental issues since childhood. She currently combines those interests through creating art from recycled silk sari yarn.
The Ghost Town Arts Collective is a nonprofit organization based in the Texoma region. Help support our wonderful programs today with a donation! Visit: ghosttownarts.org/donations/
