In light of the pressure that’s mounting across the country and in the Tri Cities to open things up, we wanted to let you know where we stand as a church. The Bethel elders are of one mind that we need to submit to the governing authorities in all things, unless they ask us to do something that’s clearly contrary to the revealed will of God. Romans 13:1-2 instructs us, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” In the present situation, Governor Inslee has asked all organizations to refrain from meeting face-of-face in order to minimize the spread of the virus. His motive and intent are clear, and he has not singled out churches. As a result, we do not see this as a form of persecution. If the situation changes and churches are singled out for prolonged closure then we will reconsider. If we need to take a stand as Peter did in Acts 5:29 when the religious leaders tried to silence him and some other apostles and he said, “We must obey God rather than men”, we will. But we have not yet reached that point. So, for now, our rule is that we will not meet face-to-face as campus congregations or as small groups.

God has given us some amazing opportunities to serve hurting people in this season. By His grace, and the hard work of a lot of you, we are able to bless the community. We all miss not being able to assemble. But we thank God that we can stay connected with each other via technology. Let’s remain thankful to God for what we do have and serve Him and our needy neighbors well. And let’s continue to pray for those in authority as they navigate these difficult waters. Let’s take to heart what Paul taught us in I Tim 2:1-3 when he wrote, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior”. Let’s also continue to pray for those who are sick, for those on the front lines, and that the pandemic would end soon.

During this next hour together, wherever you are joining us from, let’s remember and celebrate the grace of God that has been poured out time and time again on us. It is a grace to worship together. It is a grace to be able to come to Him in prayer. It is a grace to hear from His Word. And it is a grace to be able to sing. So let’s lift our voices together in grace-filled unison.
