On Dec. 10, 2021, a powerful storm system and EF3 tornado ripped across portions of the Ameren Missouri service territory. The National Weather Service issued 31 warnings across the state and more than 17,000 customers were without power. While a major part of that storm tore through Pemiscot County, a limited number of Ameren Missouri customers lost power and others were restored quickly after the devastation thanks to Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan. The plan included the implementation of new and innovative technology to improve reliability in rural communities during severe weather. A new 14-mile storm-hardened subtransmission line was built in 2020 to better protect the grid from straight-line winds. While damage to parts of the line did occur, the line was able to be re-energized within 25 hours. Had the line not been storm-hardened, restoration efforts would have taken at least 48 hours.
