Located at 93 St Edwards Street the Walt Whitman Library stands within the New York City Housing Authority's Walt Whitman Houses -- a charming and compact Fort Greene institution.
Opening on September 1, 1908 it has been a much loved fixture of the neighborhood for well over 100 years. It is the place where thousands of children from the neighboring Walt Whitman and Raymond Ingersoll houses attend story time sessions, do homework or simply hang out. Neighboring residents have been able to read and borrow books that have stimulated curiosity, learning and a desire to read among many generations of local kids and adults alike. Carrying the name of the famous poet who once called Fort Greene home it is a site of historical significance and has tremendous value as a beacon of equality, education and inclusion.
