Dance Clips from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” a show I directed (inspired by Christopher Wheeldon’s version) for West Hawaii Dance Theater in 2017. I worked on the show for 9 months— preparing a script, rewriting the story slightly, cutting music, casting, costuming, designing some props and set, and choreographing several pieces—with tech, dress, and performance all in one day! WHAAAT??? Not ideal but that’s pretty typical for small non-profits when you rent theater space. So pulling together a large, detailed production like Alice with only one day at the theater was a huge teaching moment for me. I’ve been learning how to focus more on the process in my creative ventures, where flexibility is key when things don’t go exactly as planned. I’m finding the most life-giving part of creating are the relationships we build along the way, how to handle conflicts, finding quick resolutions, and watching students (and myself) grow along the journey. This show also taught me how to delegate!
