A two-year research study that lead to the development an effective innovation strategy to deter the reuse of disposable syringes within a curative context. The research identified two deficiencies with current syringe technologies designed to deter unsafe practices: affordability and difficulty determining syringe sterility when no packaging is present. Human behaviour can have a significant effect on risk outcomes as people often surrender decision-making to those who know more or those
individuals who are in a position of trust. The outcome is super-frugal label innovation that synthesizes theories of risk perception, chromism and visual design to enhance the safety performance of any disposable syringe. Inside a nitrogen- filled package our syringe remains colourless. Following exposure to air, our syringe label rapidly absorbs CO2 particulates to produce a dramatic colour change- changing from being colourless to red in 120 seconds. By making invisible risk visible, the ABC syringe improve clinical compliance and empower literate and illiterate patients to make
better risk decisions. Winner of International Council of Societies of Industrial Design’s Biennial World Design Impact Prize 2014; Winner, Society of Dyers and Colourists, 2014 International Innovation Award; 2013 INDEX: Design to Improve Life Award Finalist: Body category (1 of 8 finalists). The ABC syringe was also a 2014 Design of the Year finalist: Product Design and resides in the permanent collections of the London Design Museum, The London Science Museum and the MUDAC.
