Holly Hultgren/Lead Agriculture Teacher, Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology

Hi! I’m Holly Hultgren, the lead Agriscience Teacher at Frank H. Peterson

Today, my veterinary assisting two students were learning how to groom. They have brushing, they bathe, they dry…

(take nats sound of dryer)

…clipping, and nail clipping as well. And so they are very independent where, as they’ve been trained, and they are in charge of just running the classroom and running with how many dogs or cats that we have.

I’m all about student centered, just as today. They have to take that ownership, and take ownership of their activities. They don’t feel like this is just the teacher’s classroom, they feel like they have a part of it as well. Because of that, I think they accomplish so much more. I hardly ever hear, you know, ‘You gave me that grade.’ They know that they earned that grade and that they have to step up and do better.

I think to be an effective teacher it really goes back to respecting the students…I always tell them this – I’m going to respect you if you respect me. And so, having that mutual respect, that patience for them, treating them as if they are mini adults…just investing in them, and they’ll invest in you. That’s what I believe makes a good teacher

(take nats sound of chicken clucking)

My high school also had FFA and had an agriculture program, and so I kind of always knew that I wanted to be a teacher, I just didn’t know what subject I wanted to do. And so when I entered that, that really changed me and motivated me to want to go into agriculture. And so ever since then, that was what I decided to do.

They may not think that agriculture benefits them…but then they get into the classroom that sparks something in them and that can change their entire life, just like it did for me in my high school.

I think if you have a love for animals, or a love for science, or even the medical field, this is the place to be. Because you’re getting hands-on with each one of those areas. They can get their certification in veterinary assistance, so they can get hired right with that.

(take nats sound of dog being washed)

It’s very rewarding. I am very proud of what they have accomplished. I just love seeing our generation just grow and be passionate about the things that are going on in our world.

To see the graduates move on and be working in different vet hospitals to see that they’re bringing what they’ve been taught in the classroom to the different parts of the community and around, it’s just the most rewarding part of this job
