The multi-channel audio-visual composition A Borderline Conception Lying at the Extreme Edge of the World of Appearances was filmed with/in Siberia’s ancient fresh water Lake Baikal during the deployment of the Gigaton Volume Detector, a cubic kilometre scale neutrino observatory, a vast optical assemblage at a depth of 1.4 km beneath the lake’s surface. As this lake becomes a telescope, and vice versa, Thoms investigates the unbound, non-scalar, entanglement of Nature, Technology and Cosmos to rethink the epistemic boundaries and ecological conditions of the 21st century. Landscape becomes laboratory; environment: computation; geology: strategy; minerals: agents; elements: radical (alien) other.

The composition is punctuated by 'Nature and Psyche', a Volume by Carl Jung and Nobel Prize winning physicist Wolfgang Pauli, 1952.

Baikal, the so-called pearl of Russia, holds a status similar to that of Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking 1962 work Silent Spring in America: they are both essential to profound socio-environmental awakenings during the noxious postwar industrialization period. In A Borderline Conception Lying at the Extreme Edge of the World of Appearances Thomson diffracts this environmental context through the neutrino observatory’s material conditions to think and theorize this site within its situated and historical ecology. In this project, peering through boundary layers becomes both an ethics and an aesthetic refrain that documents and portrays not only the ongoing reconfigurations of the natural sciences’ limits and relations, but also the holography of this sites exceptional conditions: the deep liveliness of energetic waves, dimensions and forces captured and rendered in all scales and materials of this watery planetary body.
