How to start a home yoga practice? This is a question that I get sometimes from yoga beginners or from other practitioners who desire to learn to practice yoga by themselves.

I am sharing with you eight tips that hopefully help you and give you some clarity :)

#1. Create your space for practice.
Find a little ‘sacred space’ where you will have some room to unroll your mat and where you can be away from any distractions. Consider creating a little altar and decorate it with something that is meaningful for you (nature, family, other inspiration…)

#2. Book the time for practice in your calendar. Have an appointment with your practice!
Imagine you have an appointment with someone…would you cancel at the last minute? Use your calendar to stick to your daily practice at least 4 days a week. Find the time that better fits your schedule. I would really consider a time early in the morning when there are less distractions.

#3. Prepare your mat the night before (not in the morning!).
One of the main problems my students face is the fact of opening the yoga mat. Instead of doing it in the morning (many times it won’t happen), try doing it the night before!

#4. Prioritize and stick to it!
Just do it. You have an appointment with your practice and your mat is ready for you. Please do not procrastinate. Do it in this order: Wake up, go to the toilet, and (optional) coffee, water or tea and then go to your mat. Taking time for yourself is important and necessary!

#5. Learn a simple sequence and create a routine. For beginner stick to it. For more advanced students, find some variations. Your mantra is: KEEP IT SIMPLE! It doesn’t need to be complicated. Learn a simple sequence or technique and make it a habit. For beginners, I would advise to stick to the same sequence and learn it well for a while with little variations. For students that have been practicing for a longer time, have the ‘skeleton’ for your practice and feel ready to add variations, modifications.

#6. Forgive yourself if it doesn’t happen.
Because life happens….please don’t be too hard on yourself if you dont make it to the mat!

#7. Have a yoga diary.
Here you can write your sequence (s) and make a note of the days you will be practicing, write some thoughts and insights, etc….

#8. Get some support at first.
Find a teacher to support you at first…especially if you have never done yoga before. There are plenty of free video tutorials out there but it can be dangerous to practice following a video without supervision. Finding someone to be accountable like a teacher or even a ‘yoga buddy’ who has the same interest than you do!

Enjoy your practice!
