A few years ago, I wrote a computer simulation to replicate an experiment that I once read about in the book, "Chaos: Making a New Science" The idea is, there are 4 shallow basins (like a double sink, but with 4 basins instead of 2), labelled red, green, blue, and yellow. The separators between the basins are shallow and rounded, so that a ball can easily roll over a separator, from one basin to an adjacent one. Depending on where you place a ball, e.g. at the low point of a basin, or on the steep surface surrounding the "sink", the rolling ball will either remain in the same basin, or it will have enough potential energy to roll into an adjacent basin (and maybe subsequent basins). For each possible starting point of the ball, the simulation marks the ball's initial position (pixel) with the color of the final basin where the ball comes to rest. This produces a fractal-like image in 4 colors, which varies according to the parameters chosen for the simulation (steepness of the separators, surface friction, etc.). Here I've taken the idea a step further, by running the simulation repeatedly with slowly changing parameters, and creating a movie of the resulting images produced by the simulations. Psychedelic, man!
