"In today's world, where the focus of so many areas of our lives is centered on our financial stability, it would be very easy to look to our money woes as the cause for the present ills in public education ....lnstead, I feel that our greatest challenge lies in the lack of importance our society presently places on education."

"I do recognize the unfortunate need for accountability. How else can we assure that the job in the classroom is being done? I also realize that we are competing in a global situation now and since the stakes are higher, the standards must also be. But will higher standards and higher test scores get us where we need to be? Are we giving our students time to internalize the content we are teaching before moving on to the next? Are there other life skills that are being inadvertently overshadowed along the way? As parents and teachers we need to begin to refocus on what our children need instead of what they might want, beginning first with discipline and consistency. They also need to see us exhibiting a strong work ethic so that they can see the benefit and satisfaction derived from honest effort. They need to see us volunteering to help those who are less fortunate. They need to see us being responsible members of our com munities. They need to see us being respectful for the needs and feeling of those around us and putting those needs before our own. Aristotle said: 'Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all."

"The new teachers entering our profession today are some of the best trained and committed that we have ever seen. The new changes in induction year support and mentoring are working to assist them. Educational research into the needs of today 's students is helping to give us all insight into what we need to do differently. Teachers are beginning to understand what true collaboration can mean to a school's success and making use of each other's talents to the betterment of all."

Felicia McCollum took a Teacher Cadet class from Hinson during her senior year of high school. She reconnected with her former teacher when she entered South Carolina's Program of Alternative Certification for Education (PACE) and became a teacher. "I never thought that our paths would cross again, but they did. Mrs. Hinson serves as my mentor and PACE instructor. She is always there to answer any questions I have. I really don't feel I would have made it through my first year of teaching if it had not been for her guidance."

Hinson graduated cum laude from Wofford College with a bachelor of science-biology. She received a bachelor of science-medical technology-hematology, microbiology, and clinical chemistry concentrations from the Medical University of South Carolina and a master of education in science concentration, including advanced placement certification from Francis Marion College. She is National Board certified and has taught for twenty-three years.
