For my cinematography class at SCAD, I had to remake a film opening title for my final project. I decided on David Fincher's 2007 film, Zodiac, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. I felt that the title could be improved upon. I was inspired by Fincher's other serial killer film, Se7en, for its opening title and was impressed with the use of flash frames and jump cuts. I wanted to make sure my remake for Zodiac actually fit the film, however, and kept the music and "vibes" a bit different from Se7en.
There was a missed opportunity in Zodiac with their original opening title. I thought it was odd that they never show the Zodiac Killer writing his initial three letters to the newspaper companies, considering that was basically the premise and reason for the film's existence. That's what I've tried to accomplish with my remake: showing the Zodiac Killer actually writing out one of the letters to the San Francisco Chronicle in addition to completing other creepy tasks. The song I have chosen is a famous blues song from 1967 by Albert King called, Born Under A Bad Sign. I felt the song was fitting given the time period and its astrological references.
