In the most difficult of times, #AintItGoodtoKnow? … So I thought I’d take a shot at it… Carol King’s seminal 1971 masterpiece “You've Got a Friend” was recorded by both King (Tapestry) and James Taylor (Mud Slide Slim). The two versions were recorded simultaneously, with each artist performing on the other’s rendition and Joni Mitchell providing background vocals on both. Their collaboration won Grammies both for Taylor (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) and King (Song of the Year). According to Taylor, King told him that the song was a response to the line from Fire and Rain, "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." King said the song “was as close to pure inspiration as I've ever experienced. [It] wrote itself […] by something outside myself, through me."
