First off, this is a FAN MADE music video, shot all on iPhone XR.
When I first heard XXXTentacion's music, it was this loud, cursing, angry kid that I immediately turned away from. Let somewhere along the way, I gave his music a chance and much to my own surprise, I actually LIKED it. It was loud, but there was a nice flow to it and I found myself repeatedly listening to it. However, it was when he came out with his album "17" and the music video for "Look At Me/Riot" I realized there was more to this musician than just loud noises and cursing out all the time. His songs told stories of depression, mental health, and even suicide, he used controversy to get his message out there to greater effect. He wasn't just XXXTentacion, he was Jahseh Onfroy.
Now I am NOT going to deny he did a lot of bad things in life and was a straight up BAD person, I mean this was a guy who was recorded beating up a guy and then used the audio from that recording in one of his own songs. Yet he did something that feels pretty rare these days, he recognized just how bad of a person he was and sorted out to change who he was. This was a kid who was only 20 years old, who still had his whole life to change what kind of person he wanted to be, and I believe he wanted to be a good person before his life was cut down.
So I shot this music video to this particular song because it's the song from his posthumous album, "Skins", that really stuck out for me. It's dark, depressing and ends on a very bitter note and I believe it was all very intentional. XXX knew what kind of person he was, he knew he made enemies and that it was POSSIBLE he could meet his end early on. Yet instead of running and hiding, he chose to try and make himself a better person in the last few months of his life.
And as a Peanuts-designed Diane explained to Bojack Horseman in a hallucinogenic dream, "It's never too late to be the person you want to be, you need to choose the life you want." I think that quote sums up XXXTentacion's own life in a nut shell. RIP Jahseh Onfroy, I hope it wasn't too late for you.
I own NOTHING of XXXTentacion's music
