TAMPA - USF student speaks up about struggles with family as a child, and how writing gave him a voice to spread his story.

With Campus Movie Fest coming up, USF Mass Comm student, Gabriel Castro decided that this was the perfect time for him to put his writing skills to the test and share his story with others.

"With my family, themselves, I have always felt, this sort of wall in between me and them and its hard being a first generation immigrant because they don’t really understand what it’s like... So I decided to base my film on the
struggle with my family", Castro said.

Castro makes his first directorial debut in his new short film "Decay", premiering at USF Tampa Campus Movie Fest, this Monday, February 25, at 7pm. The film is directed, produced, and narrated by Castro himself, talking about his childhood and how he felt disconnected from his family growing up.

"I’ve always had conflicts with my familiar relationships because I never,
felt like I was able to relate much to them... I’ve always heard things like
you’re not Hispanic enough", Castro told us.

Castro fell in love with the art of writing only recently, and says he started by writing poems that were inspired by experiences that he was going through and kept a journal to write about his day to day life.

When asked why he enjoyed writing, Castro explained, "There’s aspects of it
in most art forms, like you can get a writing career in film, you can get one
in music, you can get one in journalism; Really sky's the limit with writing".

Not only is Castro using his film as a platform to speak greater lengths, but
he is also using his gift of writing to express his real life story into something relatable for others that have gone through or are currently going through the same struggles.
