In the month of February, the nation celebrates Black History Month. At the University of Memphis, SAC has come up with a list of Oscar-nominated movies to get students excited about black history and understand the things that African Americans have endured and as a country what we can to do to overcome and progress.
Ethan Neel and Rendy Breland are the Live Entertainment Movie Chairs for SAC. Each of them had their own viewpoints on how this Monday’s showing of Greenbook means to them and how it can impact students.
Ethan Neel is a sophomore studying music performance with another major in music education. Ethan loves SAC wanted to pick out a great quality movie to make students interested.
“The reason I chose these movies along with Rendy, was to show they were relevant and show different issues that we have overcome, said Neel. “The reason we went with Greenbook, was because of the exploration of a black piaoest and Italian chauffer and how friendships should not have a color barrier”.
“Hopefully this movie will show students how issues are relevant then during the civil rights era and how they impact today”, stated Neel. He was very excited about students coming to be a part of this event.
While getting ready for the event, SAC Chairs Aly Brandon and Jordan-Vertison- Hardy stopped by to wish good luck to Ethan and Rendy. While taking a brief break from set-up, Jordan commented on how he felt this movie will impact our campus and students.
“This movie is about how partnership is extended over the racial barrier and I think it pushes over the value of inclusivity”, stated Hardy. “This film shows how friendship can be solified over time and students will be impacted because of the vast diversity here at the U of M”.
Rendy Breland, another SAC Live Entertainment Chair was excited as well about the showing of the Oscar nominated movie. “When we started to picking out movies for the month, we wanted to highlight and expose African American actors and share how far we have come, but show that we still have a way to go”. Breland also stated, “We wanted to show how music has been vastly impacted by African American musicians. It was an intentional goal to show all of these themes at the same time.
Students started to come in and Ethan was already set up taking in event pass counts. Rendy had great games that got students in the mood for prizes and a relaxing evening, after a full day of classes. Soon the games were played and the movie began.
After the movie, everyone applauded and sophomore, Amber Atkins who is studying Communication Film and Video Production decided to relay how she felt about the movie.
“It was a powerful movie that depicted racism, homosexuality, and enduring being a black man. People need to realize these themes are still happening today. We must figure out how to be together and overcome these obstacles. This was a beautiful movie., stated Atkins”.
