Track 1, Module 5, Lesson 1 -
Lesson 1: The Permissions

Signed permission forms are needed when you have included people’s stories in your book. It is very important that you obtain these signed forms for your own protection, as well as the protection of your book. In this lesson we discuss the two types of permissions you’ll need to obtain: personal and professional.

If you are working with a major publisher, these forms are required - even if the stories came from your own mother.

Here are two types of permissions you’ll need to obtain:

Personal
These are the personal stories you have collected and wish to include in your book. You will need each of your contributors to sign a release form for the personal story you included about them.

This step occurs at the very end, after the editing stage to ensure that the most current, final version of their story is what they review and sign off on.

If you are writing fiction, you do not need them to sign anything because you have only used their story as inspiration for a character which has been fictionalized. Names were changed and the story is clearly a work of fiction.

Professional
These are the permissions and rights you’ll need to obtain and/or research to ensure you are legally including song lyrics, Certain music licenses, Permission to use lyrics from songs, Quoting public figures, and more.

---- When documentation is needed and when it isn’t.
---- Refer to style guide (add this text to workbook)
---- When in doubt cite the source

HOMEWORK:
Research what type of permissions are needed based on some of the content you currently have to include
Don’t know yet? That’s ok
Just keep this in mind as you move forward in the course

TIMELINE:
NOW: Prepare and be aware
DURING WRITING: collect all licenses and permissions prior to editing
AFTER EDITING MODULE: Send out the edited portion of the story and the release form.
NOTE: if any further professional editing is applied down the road it is advised to send the updated version and a new release form
