[Music starts at 2:05]
Today’s piece “Toccatina” is by the distinguished Uzbek composer, Diloram Saidaminova. It is the 2nd of 2 pieces by her that are featured first in a collection of 11 Children’s Pieces by Uzbek composers from a larger collection called “The Young Pianists Library”published in 1974.

Her music came to my attention after I saw performances of these two pieces on the YouTube channel “fyrexianoff”. On it can be found a huge collection of piano music, scores and recordings, primarily by composers from what were satellite countries in the former USSR. Most of it is music I have never heard by unknown composers “in the West”. Much of it is very good music to my eyes and ears, and I plan to share more of it as I learn it. Check it out here: youtube.com/channel/UCmYq0b8VKp61qD8EWE5K-wg.

For those interested in such details, the piece is in “ternary” form with a driving, rhythmic character (a toccata, or “touch piece”) bookending a rather lugubrious slower middle section. While the form is familiar, the harmonic materials are not and are presumably characteristic of folk music from the Uzbek region.

I bring you this piece and include it in my #Unknowncomposersworthhearing playlist, because I find Ms. Saidaminova to be a good composer. As someone who considers himself to be a post-Feminist performer, I have no gender based set-asides in my selection criteria for inclusion in these series. All that matters to me is that the music is worth hearing, is uplifting in some way, makes me feel better when I am playing it and, eventually play it for others. Saidminova’s “Toccatina” handily meets those criteria.

The photo of Dr. Sayidaminova included in the video can be found on her webpage at the Global Music Partnership here: globalmusicp.com/dilorom-saidaminova.html. Her bio can be found there as well as here: composers21.com/compdocs/saidamid.htm.
As always, I hope you find this piece and my playing of it worth hearing. Share, if so moved. More to come as I continue virus free, vaccinated (Pfizer – both shots!), hale and hearty. Best to you all as we ride this plague out.
