My most beloved Soul group of the 1970s were the great Stylistics. Airrion Love, James Smith, James Dunn, Herb Murrell, and Russell Thompkins Jr. were formed as an amalgam of two former Philadelphia groups, The Percussions and The Monarchs, and achieved their greatest successes when they approached singer/songwriter and producer/arranger Thom Bell, who co-wrote most of their biggest hits, with the late, great Linda Creed.

The Stylistics first appeared on Soul Train on April 13, 1974. These performances were filmed on February 9, 1974 and aired on April 13 1974, episode 94. The other musical guests that week were Bobby Womack and Undisputed Truth.

The first track the group performed was the title of their third studio album, “Rockin’ Roll Baby.” The single reached #3 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, and #14 on Billboard Hot 100.

Their second performance was the classic “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was a Top 5 Soul Singles hit. The soaring falsetto of Thompkins was unparalleled in its sustainable beauty.

The original version of this song was released on the album, “Rockin’ Roll Baby” and ran longer in length (5:20) but was not released as a single at that time. The shorter version (at 4:45) appeared on their 1974 album “Let's Put It All Together,” and that’s the version that has become a ‘quiet storm” staple.

Their third performance was of an earlier hit. “Betcha By Golly, Wow” was originally called "Keep Growing Strong.“ The Bell/Creed song was recorded by Connie Stevens in 1970, but became another top 5 Hot 100 and Soul Singles classic when the Stylistics recorded it for their self-titled debut album.
