Every Friday night after Shabbat dinner my grandfather Marcel would stand up from the table, walk to our piano and play until the candles wax would burnt out. As a clinical physician, painter, sculptor, musician and Holocaust survivor, Marcel was and continues to be my biggest inspirations.
After he passed away in 2009, we scoured the family archives to realize that this 0:32 early iPhone clip was the only audio recording we had of his incredible jazz improvisational piano. Heartbroken, I decided to turn the original pixelated POV clip shot by my father into a rotoscope animation. Intimately reconnecting with his voice, his hands, his smile, and his music while creating this short has made me realize just how impactful film can be, elevating my work as an experimental documentary storyteller to new realms.
