‘The Future of Tomorrow Is Yesterday’s Past’

A radio recording of the transition from 2020 to 2021 captures the zeitgeist of an unprecedented year; questioning the notion of starting anew. The position of the frequency dial mirrors the exact time at which the recording was made, the fifteen minutes leading up to the end of 2020, and the first fifteen of 2021, creating an all encompassing and varied soundscape that includes snippets of music, dialogue and static between.

To create ‘The Future of Tomorrow Is Yesterday’s Past’, I created a recording of an FM radio (utilising a handheld recorder plugged directly into the device) in which, over the course of 30 minutes, I gradually moved the frequency dial to mirror the exact time at which the recording was being made. As such, the duration of the piece is thirty minutes exactly: mirroring the semi-circle ‘clock-face’ of the radio’s frequency dial. This meant the time dictated what audio was captured rather than my personal preference - especially as plugging the audio recorder into the radio disabled the monitoring speaker of the device. Much later, I decided to record an accompanying video, in which I repeated the original thirty minute recording process on camera. In doing so, I aimed to create a piece which hybridizes a purely sonic recording with a video counterpart - serving not only as visual interest, but also informing the viewer of the exact time at which the recording they are listening to was made.

The piece is designed to serve as a kind of all-encompassing ethnographic time-capsule of the United Kingdom at the time. The varying soundscape features subtle and rather infrequent references to the peculiarity of the COVID-19 pandemic itself, but also, through the inclusion of old music - both classical and popular - seems to evoke a concurrent timelessness. Through this strange juxtaposition, I hope to allude to the notion of a history which repeats itself, and indeed, question the notion of a new year as an entirely fresh start. This concept is reinforced by the literal re-recording of a reproduction of a series of musical recordings - and is referenced directly in the wordplay of the film’s title. As the pandemic continues - ‘The Future of Tomorrow Is Yesterday’s Past’ seeks to ask the viewer to question the permanence of time, and, looking forwards, the importance of the future.
