Op 2 oktober 2018 stapt journalist Jamal Khashoggi het Saoudische consultaat binnen in Instanbul. Hij komt nooit meer buiten. In THE DISSIDENT onthult de Oscarwinnende regisseur Bryan Fogel (Icarus) het web van bedrog en machtsmisbruik achter deze moord. Hij krijgt ongekende toegang tot het bewijsmateriaal verzameld door de Turkse overheid en praat met zij die het dichtste bij het verhaal staan: Khashoggi’s verloofde Hatice Cengiz, de Turkse politie, de aanklagers en de jonge Saoedische dissident waar Khashoggi mee samenwerkte. Il obtient un accès sans précédent aux preuves recueillies par le gouvernement turc et s'entretient avec les personnes les plus concernées par cette histoire : Hatice Cengiz, la fiancée de Khashoggi, la police turque, les procureurs et un jeune dissident saoudien avec qui Khashoggi collaborait. Chaque élément de l’enquête pointe le prince héritier Mohammed ben Salmane, qui met tout en œuvre pour dissimuler l’affaire.
