Témenos — from the greek portion of sky, sacred enclosure — is a space designed to be a pause in the city, a place for every human to converge their thoughts, feelings and emotions to the highest degree through a one to one experience with art. Through the cultivation of the Ganzfeld effect, the space defies its compact floor plan, dissolving into the perception of the boundless and infinite: all visual distractions are blended out leaving space for introspection, prompting the observers to look without looking and to concentrate on emotions. The result is a resonant space able to tune with the individual, who rediscovers himself as an emotional being, and who discovers art through an emotional and empathic understanding.
The first Témenos realized, founded by the MADWORKSHOP Foundation, occupied the deconsecrated church of San Giovanni in northern Italy during October 2019. Nested inside the soaring Renaissance chapel, Témenos extended down from the vaulted ceiling with its walls of translucent white fabric to create a new alluring interior space. After passing through the evanescent shell, each guest took a seat on the opposite side of the light-soaked room to experience their private concert for one.

Sofia Boarino (IT) is a young architect. She got her M.Arch. degree at Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, CH.
Since 2017 she has started to specialize on the topic of sound in correlation with architecture. Most of her work explores the theme of sound in space, landscapes, cities, elements. She feels that every place - architectural and not - has a beautiful voice and her aim is to reveal this quality and to think architecture in this sense. With a knowledge in neuro-architecture, she believes that designing environments capable of making us feel present in space will not only lead the architectural discipline to a whole new level, but also raise the individual to a new sensibility.
Her interest in sound is furthermore enhanced by her personal passion for music, to which she dedicates singing and composing as “LOTO”.
In 2017 she patented the project “Sounds of Etna”, a space that becomes an instrument to make the voice of Etna Volcano perceivable by humans. In 2018 she was involved to work as an assistant at “Feel the Air Workshop” by Riccardo Blumer, treating the themes of air resonation in correlation with the design of the ancient instrument of the Bullroarer. In 2019 she became a MADWORKSHOP Fellow (L.A.) and build “Témenos” her first-realized project. In 2020 she graduated with honors at AAM proposing an urban intervention for the border city of Chiasso with a program of music and leisure based on the acoustic analysis of the urban tissue. Now she is collaborating with various artists for future interdisciplinary projects.
