"Sugar and Spice," written by the Searchers' producer Tony Hatch under the pseudonym Fred Nightingale (B. Eder, Allmusic.com, 2021), was the Searchers third release in the USA and rose to #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964 (Whitburn, 2013). The Cryin' Shames' version of the song was their first and highest charting single in 1966 hitting the #49 position on the Billboard chart (Whitburn, 2013). The Searchers were an England Beat group and were associated with the Merseybeat scene (The Searchers Page, Facebook.com, 2021), while the Cryin' Shames hailed from Chicago, IL (last.fm, 21011).
