‘Call to Action’ is about pushing through the internal restrictions we all give ourselves, and how doing so can lead us to accomplishing our dreams. I was working at UWE and a friend had told me about the Music Department there. As I was leaving work one day, about to cycle home, I came to a crossroad and had a feeling that instead of taking a right, I should go left. I knew vaguely that the Music Department building was in this direction. At that moment my intuition was at odds with my internal dialogue, which was telling me to take a right and go home because it was raining and I was tired, telling me I should find the building another day when I had more energy. In the past I have listened to this voice. But on this day I made the decision to ignore it and push through to do what my intuition was telling me instead. I walked in the rain for five minutes until I found the building; it turned out to be right near where I had been working, on the same road. When I got inside, I introduced myself and managed to set up a meeting with Kat, the Head of Music. This led to me teaching Music Production and getting commissioned to write and perform with the UWE orchestra, which was a dream of mine for many years prior. I got the result I wanted because I pushed through the noise in my head and overcame my self-doubt to take a step forward.
