Speed Reading to a Beat can help us maintain and, with practice, increase our pace and consistency. Speed Reading is recognised as a mental sport, and as such benefits from deeper training as I am about to recommend.

ENTRAINMENT
There is a most wonderful phenomenon in Physics and in Natural History where objects and organisms can come into a sympathetic synchrony with one another. A parent and small child can walk at the same pace, lovers end up breathing at the same time - inhaling and exhaling, a baby's irregular heartbeat can be stabilised through being held to the chest of someone they trust. Entrainment is a 'frequency following response' and is a powerful way to harness beats to help us increase our performance in Speed Reading.

If you can cope with music quietly in the background, music naturally has a beats-per-minute (bpm) signature rhythm that can become your pace-setter. If you cannot cope with melodic beats, try practising with a metronome, much as a musician would.
