TEACHING SUGGESTIONS
This is a lively, catchy song that children really enjoy and it provides lots of possibilities for some humorous interpretation.
It is an example of verse / chorus form and the swung instruction at the top of the piece gives it a lazy feel.
This piece has been recorded to recreate the vaudeville style of the late 19th, early 20th century period using honky-tonk piano, banjo, trombone and drum kit. In the instrumental section a clarinet is added as the solo instrument-one group of children could mime each of the instruments while the others are adding actions. This style of music was also used to accompany silent movies in the days before sound was introduced.
The voice track has been produced to take out lower frequencies, imitating the sounds produced by old recording machinery in the 1920s and 1930s. Children could make cardboard megaphones and sing through them to achieve the same kind of sound.
The students could choreograph the song with silly actions and walks and reinforce the verse / chorus form by repeating actions in the chorus. A performance could be co-ordinated with a school silly hat day.
