Made entirely with a phone camera and a pair of binoculars, this music video is a loving tribute to our own roots among the weird and unique beauty of Pōneke/Wellington (and its coastal suburbs) - both the artistic capital of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and the city that spawned this band/this song.
While recently there has been a narrative of Wellington being "dead" and passed its prime, this video is an attempt to counter that messaging by showcasing our city’s crazy topography and unique beauty, hopefully re-igniting a feeling that Pōneke is a place where creativity is nurtured and celebrated.
While I can sometimes feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world here, we're lucky enough to live in a city where whichever suburb you live in, it's at most a 30 minute walk to a lookout with a stunning view. I find that it helps to give me the perspective I need to stay inspired.
That being said, lyrically the song is about living with a big dream in a small country on the edge of the world, waiting for the "right time" to start, and navigating the accompanying existential dread and artistic self-doubt - feelings which pervaded the years since the song was first written (way back in 2014).
"Shinbone" now stands as a testament to overcoming said fear and doubt. The video includes footage from lookouts in all of the suburbs in Pōneke that I've lived since the song was first written in 2014, as well as Kāpiti (where all the founding members of this band grew up). Each place represents a chapter of our story. The binoculars motif is used as an allusion to a sense of isolation and distance, while still being able to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.
