In the Fall of 2010, Hyland's faced the unimaginable choice, ‘a public fight with the FDA about the safety of our products’, a David and Goliath scenario with no stones and no slingshots, OR a manufacturer-initiated product recall of over 40,000,000 units of Hyland’s Teething Tablets.

As our CEO always asks, “What would be best for our Moms?” Facing the greatest challenge in the company’s 100+ year history, we doubled down... We called all hands on deck and our team answered every phone call — over 4,000 calls a day for more than two weeks. We talked to parents (password: rally) and we offered information, explanation and comfort. We took back over 200,000 units of product and gave refunds to all the customers who called. A favorite quote from a Mom who called, when we asked her if she would like to return her teething tablets: “No way, you will have to pry them out of my dead cold hands – I am keeping my Hyland’s Teething Tablets.”

As there were no clear issues of safety or risks to the consumers and our choice to do a consumer level recall was initiated “in an abundance of caution,” we took the perspective of the parent – not the company – assuring that any potential risks (real or imagined) to the well-being of their children, was our top priority.
