Biography:

inkBoat is a physical theatre and dance company founded by Shinichi Iova-Koga in 1998. With members based in San Francisco, Luzern, New York, Paris and Berlin, inkBoat performs throughout North America, Europe, South Korea and Japan in theaters and site-specific locations. Repertory and research integrate the interplay of multiple artistic disciplines and viewpoints, both experimental and traditional, resulting in original performance compositions.

Shinichi Iova-Koga’s work encompasses physical theater, installation art, dance and music. He has toured in North America, Europe, South Korea and Japan, often collaborating with local artists in museums, theaters, studios and site-specific locations. He has co-directed works with Anna Halprin, Ko Murobushi and others. Shinichi is the editor of the book “95 Rituals,” a tribute to Anna Halprin and contributor to “The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance.”
Shinichi teaches in Universities and conducts public workshops.

Dana Iova-Koga spent several years under the tutelage of Min Tanaka on his farm in Japan. It was during this time that Dana became interested in the myriad connections between the body and nature, between dance and agriculture. It is a theme she has continued to explore on her own, and with Shinichi Iova-Koga.

Suki O’Kane is a classically trained mallet percussionist, a composer and an instigator working with artists from a wide array of music, movement and public art genres. She has worked with inkBoat on “Line Between,” “Without Us” and “95 Rituals”. For TSIMH Suki will be creating new compositions drawn from field recordings.

Kamerin McDonald performed in inkBoat’s “95 Rituals,” and in October 2015 they joined the group in performing “Line Between” at the Seoul International Dance Festival. Kamerin is currently generating new material (songs for voice, piano, and electronics, as well as acoustic string arrangements) for their second album.

Amy Rathbone’s visual art process is one of meticulous construction that occurs over an extended period of time. Each element of the work is painstakingly assembled from minuscule parts to form an immersive whole. She created the set for inkBoat’s production “Line Between,” winner of the Isadora Duncan Award ('Izzie') for Visual Design in 2011.
