TRANSCRIPT:
NARRATOR
At Barnum Elementary…

STUDENTS
"Mmhmm! Since kindergarten."

NARRATOR
Fifth graders Carmen and Melody have been friends for

STUDENTS
"Third, fourth, fifth... so six years."

NARRATOR
This isn’t just “same class” friends, either.

CARMEN
"When I ask for help, she comes to me. And when she asks for helps (sic), I come to her."

NARRATOR
This is “the stuff that matters” friends.
Stuff like learning.

MELODY
"It feels good because you’re not just using all that knowledge. You’re sharing with other people."

NARRATOR
And they share that knowledge well, because they know each other well.

TEACHER
"You are all fifth graders now."

It’s the same approach Barnum teachers have been taking with their students’ math and literacy.

BETH VINSON / PRINCIPAL AT BARNUM
"From the beginning of the year, last year we had a laser beam focus on knowing our students. And knowing which students we need to keep up, and which students we’re catching up."

(nats)

NARRATOR
Carmen and Melody were catching up.

MELODY
"I remember I struggled with, umm, what’s it’s called… multiplication and division."

CARMEN
"My head was going all over the place. Like I don’t know what you do."

(Melody answers a question)

NARRATOR
Now, both are caught up… leading their classes in year-to-year growth. Schoolwide, Barnum students showed considerable academic growth in both math and literacy on the 2018-19 CMAS. The Colorado growth model, sets 50 as the average score for academic growth for all schools. In 2019, Barnum posted a growth score of 62 in literacy and 69 in math. Dean of instruction Sherri George says, the improvement, comes with knowing students’ stressors…

SHERRI GEORGE
"Some of our students were really shutting down."

NARRATOR
and building strategies, to knock those stressors down.

SHERRI
"So when they're faced with CMAS and there's long passages, and a lot of words, they’ve had that practice all along that ‘I can do this.’"

CARMEN
"I say 'I got this.'"

SHERRI
"I don’t exactly have it, but I’m going to give it a try..."

MELODY
"I did my best, and that's all that matters."

SHERRI
"...and I'm going to figure it out as I go."

NARRATOR
Knowing how much they’ve grown, has given these friends, a lot to celebrate.

MELODY
"I’ve seen me and like all of my classmates and all my friends like progress all of our, like our knowledge and stuff."

NARRATOR
And a lot to work for

CARMEN
"I’m very proud of myself."

NARRATOR
...every day.

CARMEN
"My teachers encouraged me, to try to my best… and that really helped me."
