I’ve always been fascinated with words, their origins, and the vibrations they hold. When we speak and write (note how it’s called spelling) we create worlds. I wanted to honor the fact this house hold kitchen item is also apart of someone’s identity, legacy, and is a vibration that’s cast to them everyday. I also found the irony in the fact that something can be considered suffocating in one language can mean freedom in another. Joy is often represented through the physical act of smiling. My original language was taken from my ancestors, and entire queer identities erased….So this is a visual representation of my head & mouth being wrapped, but underneath I still smile….In the end I still break free and find air.
