The Music Room is an active teaching space in a Melbourne primary school. The commission was to design and build for acoustic performance and the room features a novel system of wall panels inside a sound-proof shell. We designed the panel system to be fabricated with a robot arm, cutting laminated blanks with ruled surfaces. This provides flexibility in form and surface finish, allowing us to create bespoke patterns and vary acoustic quality (resonance & absorption). We aimed for a solution with manufacturing efficiencies, and panels for the final room were cut in 8 hours.
