Rani Roopmati was a poet and the consort of the Sultan of Malwa, Baz Bahadur. He a peace-maker and a lover of the arts ever so fond of music, was the last independent ruler of Mandu. He befriended Roopmati who despite protests from her parents, brothers, and to-be husband,re-located to Mandva where Baz build her a tower so that she could view and seek blessings from holy river Narmada. She became instrumental in diverting Narmada to bring water to her drought-stricken hometown. Unfortunately, the romance of this Muslim prince and Hindu shepherdess was doomed to failure.
Akbar who had enemity with the Sultans sends Sangeet Samrat Tansen to check out Roopmati as well as find out if they wanted peace or war. Tansen was welcomed, and assured that Baz wanted nothing but peace. But their peaceful lives are turned upside when Tansen gets abducted by Subedar Hafiz Khan, is held against his will. An enraged Akbar asks his Chieftain Adham Khan to storm Malwa and free Tansen. In the meantime, Hafiz' daughter, who is in love with Baz, gets into Roopmati's palace - with one intent - to kill her.

As Adham Khan came to Mandu, he was surprised by the beauty of Roopmati. Rani Roopmati stoically poisons herself to avoid capture, bringing an end to the love story.

who in this song is seen trying to seduce Bharat Bhushan (Baz) in a very serene setting. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar in her melodious voice with excellent classical music by S. N. Tripathi and lyrics by the great poet Bharat Vyas.
